About the Role

We are hiring a BackEnd Developer to join our core infrastructure engineering team in Manchester. As a key contributor, you will design, scale, and maintain high-throughput backend services, data pipelines, and distributed systems powering a modern e-commerce enterprise.

You will focus on system reliability, fault-tolerant transaction processing, data architecture, and low-latency API development to support seamless global commerce transactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Microservices Engineering: Design, build, and deploy reliable, low-latency microservices using Node.js, Go, or Python.
  • Database & Data Pipelines: Architect complex relational and non-relational database schemas, write optimized queries, and manage event-driven data streams (Kafka / RabbitMQ).
  • API Architecture: Build and secure RESTful, gRPC, and GraphQL APIs consumed by frontend web applications and mobile clients.
  • Cloud & DevOps: Partner with DevOps teams to deploy services on AWS using Docker, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).
  • Security & Reliability: Implement robust authentication/authorization protocols (OAuth2, JWT), data encryption, and automated failover systems.
  • Code Quality: Lead technical design discussions, enforce unit/integration testing standards, and mentor junior/mid-level engineers.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: 4+ years of backend software development experience in enterprise or high-scale consumer applications.
  • Core Languages: Deep knowledge of backend languages such as Node.js (TypeScript), Python, Go, or Java.
  • Databases: Advanced proficiency with PostgreSQL/MySQL, data modeling, indexing, transaction management, and Redis caching strategies.
  • Distributed Systems: Experience with event-driven architecture, distributed caching, rate limiting, and queue systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • Testing & Tooling: Strong advocate for TDD, automated integration testing, Git workflows, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Problem Solving: Proven ability to diagnose complex production bugs, optimize database queries, and improve cloud resource utilization.

Desirable Skills

  • Background in e-commerce, fin-tech, logistics platforms, or high-concurrency payment gateway handling.
  • Experience with Kubernetes orchestration, Terraform, and AWS cloud security best practices.
  • Understanding of observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).

What We Offer

  • Competitive Salary: £60,000 - £95,000 per annum dependent on senior-level background.
  • Work-Life Balance: Hybrid working arrangements (2 days office in Manchester, 3 days remote).
  • Tech Allowance: High-spec workstation setup allowance and yearly learning/conference grants.
  • Benefits Package: Comprehensive medical and dental insurance, enhanced pension contribution, company bonus scheme, and 25 days paid holiday.
